Good Afternoon! Here's a look at our busy week:
Math: We are starting Topic 0 on place value. Over the week students will write numbers in expanded and written form, compare and round large numbers. On Friday, students that made below a 70% on the area/perimeter exam will have a chance to retake the test for a better grade. Literacy: Students will continue focusing on main idea and details within nonfiction. We will take a closer look at historical, scientific, and technical nonfiction. On Thursday, students will take a formal exam on main idea & details. Writing: Throughout the week students will continue using the writing process to edit, revise and publish their persuasive writing. Their final published writing is due at the end of the day Friday 12/7 for an informal writing grade. Integrated Studies: Students will take a look into colonial life in North Carolina. They will learn about the challenges of the time period and see what life was like for a person in that time. By the end of the week, students will have picked a person to use for their Footprints in History journal writing. Happy Thanksgiving! I am so very grateful to have each of your children in my class this year!
Math: In math we are continuing the unit on area and perimeter. Today a study guide will be sent home as homework for the week. The formal test on this unit will be Friday, 11/29. If your child needs additional practice let me know. (Khan academy is a great start!) Literacy: In Literacy we are working on determining the main idea and key details in informational text. Some students will be pulled into small groups during Literacy time to review the formal test from 11/22 and have the option to retake the test for a higher grade on Friday. Writing: Students are starting their persuasive writing this week. On Monday students will work on a graphic organizer (which will be taken for an informal grade!). This organizer will help them gather thoughts on what topic they will write about throughout the week. (This writing piece will be the basis for the writing Conventions, Fluency, Content, and Organization for Quarter 2 grades) Integrated Studies: We will introduce the first take home project of the year! This project is called the "Footprints in History" project. All information for the project is sent in cougar folders. Please read over the project packet and let me know if you have questions or need supplies. **If you would like to donate supplies for students in need, my bank account would be forever grateful!** The remainder of the week will be spent studying the pioneers and colonists of North Carolina. Students will get to act like crime scene investigators to figure out what happened to the colonists of Roanoke Island! This, as well as a short 2 paragraph reflection will be due for a grade on Thursday, 11/29. HOMEWORK: -Math Study Guide! -Read & track in agenda -Footprints Project! ANNOUNCEMENTS: -11/30 - Friday Clubs! -12/3 - Hour of Code -12/5 - Early Release Day @12 Update on behavior: The fourth grade team has decided to implement a behavior policy for privileged activities. From this week forward, students must have 80% positive dojo points for the month in order to attend privileged activities. For example, in order to attend the Winter Party on Dec. 18th, students must have 80% positive dojo points. You and/or your child can log onto dojo at any time and view your child's percentage. There are many opportunities to increase dojo points throughout the day and month leading up to these fun activities! Let me know if you have questions :)
Math: This week students will be learning about area and perimeter. Students will have a quick quiz/exit ticket for an informal grade on what they have learned. Throughout the week students that made below an 80% on the last formal exam will work with their math flex group teacher on targeted skills and take a retest on Friday 11/16. **On Thursday 11/15 students will take the NC Check-in Benchmark Assessment during afternoon Literacy time. This assessment is not for a grade.** Literacy: Students will continue to read nonfiction text looking for details and using the text to make inferences. Over the week students will take a quiz for an informal grade on referring to details & making inferences. Writing: Last week students learned about persuasive writing and read sample persuasive writings. This week students will choose a topic to write about, and organize their paragraphs into a graphic organizer. The graphic organizer will be taken for an informal grade on Friday. Integrated Studies: Students continue to learn about the Native Americans of North Carolina. On Tuesday they will finish up their brochures and turn those in for an informal grade. Later in the week students will move through time to learn about the European explorers and pirates that ventured to America! Math: This week we will wrap up the multiplicative comparison unit and have a formal test on this unit on Thursday 11/8. Students should be comfortable with comparing 2 things and writing comparison equations. We will start making inferences and answering the big W questions (who, what, when, where, why) with nonfiction text. Writing: We will begin our next unit in writing. Students will learn the basics of opinion writing. By the end of the week students will begin drafting an opinionated essay. Integrated Studies: Our next IB unit is called "Where We Are in Place and Time". Students will begin looking at the beginning of North Carolina history and learn about the Native Americans that lived in each region. Students will create a brochure on the different tribes of NC throughout the week. They should be taking notes on a region each day. The brochure will be due for a grade the following week. Over the week students will take a quiz for an informal grade. Literacy: We will continue to practice describing changes in characters, setting, and events in a story. On Friday students that made below an 80% on their formal exam last week will be given a chance to retake the exam in their literacy flex group. Writing: Last call for all narrative nonfiction writing! Grades will be posted sometime on Wednesday! Any late papers will get 10 points deducted for each day it it late! Integrated Studies: We will continue to be geologists next week! Students will learn about the 3 different kinds of rocks and how rocks are made, and how to classify rocks. Math: This week we will focus on reviewing multiplication, rounding, and adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers. Students will not swap for flex math grouping this week. Literacy: Students will look into finding the meanings of unknown words in reading passages and books. Last week students learned the WAC strategy for determining words in a passage. (W - word structure/prefix/suffix, A - apposition, definition given in same sentence, C - context clues, clues given in paragraph that lead to determining the meaning of a word) Writing: We are moving the published realistic fiction writing due date to this Friday 10/21. Students will spend the week editing and revising their stories. If not completed in class, students need take home for homework. Students will have a spelling test on the October words Friday! Integrated Studies: After our Biztown field trip, students will have a chance to reflect on their visit as well as the end of our first IB unit. This week students will write reflections and discuss the most memorable lessons from this past unit! Math: Monday we will wrap up Topic 3 and review the last of our multiplication unit. On Tuesday students will take a formal test. On Wednesday we will start our next unit on comparative multiplication. In this unit students will learn how to compare products using multiplication and also double, triple, etc. products (like in recipes!) Over the week students will take a quiz for an informal grade. Literacy: Students will continue to practice describing changes in characters, setting, and events in a story. On Thursday students will take a formal test in which they must read a fiction passage. Questions may ask about character traits, describing the setting, theme, or plot of the story. Writing: Students will continue drafting their realistic fiction passage on Monday. If students have not completed their realistic fiction draft by Monday, it will be homework. Starting Tuesday we will begin editing and revising. The final copy of their story will be due Monday 10/22. Integrated Studies: This week will be all about BizTown! As we gear up for our field trip, students will learn how a community runs. Some activities include: voting for town mayor, applying for a bank account, balancing a checkbook, and writing letters to the editor! Alright, starting a new week after progress reports. There's still time to raise those grades before report cards, so it's time to get serious! Here's a look at what we're going to learn this week:
Math: In math we will continue working with methods of multiplication. Students will use multiplication skills in multiple step word problems throughout the week. On Thursday students will complete an exit ticket quiz for an informal grade and on Friday students have a formal test on Topic 3. Please let your child's math teacher or me know if they need additional resources before the test! Literacy: On Monday students will take a quiz on theme for an informal grade. The rest of the week will be geared towards describing characters, setting and events of a story or drama. Additionally, students will dive deeper into the plot of stories and learn about how and why characters change from the beginning of a story to the end. Writing: Students will use the writing process to begin drafting their realistic fiction story. Students have already brainstormed ideas for their stories. Now they need to start writing their story. Students will be given examples of stories and will need to have a rough draft complete by the end of the week. Integrated Studies: During our afternoon time, students will wrap up their Shark Tank project by Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday students will present their projects to the class. One business will be picked (by popular vote) to present to our school "investors". They will compete with other winners from 4th grade classes to win Shark Tank! On Friday students will have the House Meeting of the year from 2-2:45! Math - In math we are practicing multiplication methods. By the end of the week students should be comfortable multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 digit. (59 x 4 or 123 x 6) This process is a lot smoother if students are confident with their multiplication facts. Please practice flash cards or online games to make sure your child is quick in determining multiplication facts! Literacy - Students are working on summarizing and determining the theme of a text. Ask your child how they practice summarizing by using the 5 finger summarizing skill (somebody, wanted, but, so then)! This week in writing, students will learn the 5 parts of a letter. By the end of the week, students should be able to write friendly letters, thank you notes, and business letters for their business. Integrated Studies - Students will start working on their Shark Tank project! They will create their own business. Each day will have a new task. Students are expected to complete a task every day. If they get behind, they will have to complete as homework! ANNOUNEMENTS: 10/3 - National Walk to School Day! 10/5 - Progress Reports go home (Don't be surprised - Check powerschool for your child's grades around the clock! You don't even have to wait for the report to come home!) Math: Students are continuing their practice on finding factors, prime and composite numbers. Next week students will also look into multiples (skip counting). On Thursday, students will take a formal test on factors and multiples. If your child needs more practice, please reach out ASAP! Literacy/Writing: Students will read passages and make inferences using the details from the text. In Writing, students are finishing up their personal narrative (this is for an informal grade.) By the end of the week, students will start mapping out their first realistic fiction story. Integrated Studies: As students finish up their studies on North Carolina's resources, we will now take a look into the producers and consumers that make up NC's economy. On Wednesday students will complete an exit ticket (informal grade) where they must name a producer, consumer, good, and service. On Thursday students will take a quiz on examples of producers and consumers. Students need to have a firm grasp on these terms as we move into our next project - Shark Tank! Students will be creating their own businesses next week!
