Hello C3 Families! I am beyond proud of this group of kiddos. Both Thursday and Friday students persevered to complete their MAP tests. Ask your child how they did! I will have the data within the next week and hope to have student conferences early next week. This will be my last set of conferences with students, so if you have a goal in mind for your child, talk to them this weekend about what they want/need to achieve before heading on to 5th grade! Here's a look at next week:
In Cougar's Call on Monday and Friday we will be working on spelling and word work. This is a reminder that Wordly Wise 9 is due Friday and we will have our April Spelling Test on Friday as well. Tuesday and Thursday mornings will be used for mock EOGs from 9:30-11:20. Our connect and lunch schedule will be slightly altered because of this. (Lunch will be pushed back to 12:15-12:45.) Wednesday is Step Up Day! Students will get a chance to see what a day in the life of a 5th grader is like! Step Up Day goes from 9:30-11:30. In Math this week we are continuing the measurement unit. On Thursday and Friday we worked on converting ounces to pounds, and pounds to tons. We will continue this concept this week and have a quiz on Friday. If your child needs extra practice, please have them watch the Khan Academy Video and complete the practice quizzes! This is a quick unit, so understanding the basics of converting weight will be helpful before we move onto volume and length! Link to Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fourth-grade-math/cc-4th-measurement-topic/cc-4th-unit-conversion/v/converting-weight In Literacy this week we are wrapping up our EOG review on narrative nonfiction before moving onto nonfiction. At the end of the week we will have a quick assessment to check for understanding. In Writing, students are completing a formal letter to an upcoming 4th grader for step up day. They are using the writing process to draft, revise, edit and publish a piece for a third grader to read on Wednesday! In Integrated Studies, we are talking about electricity! Last week we talked a little about magnetism and heat. This week we will cover light, and reflection vs. refraction. Friday is Clubs day! HOMEWORK: -Literacy reading & questions -Math packet -Study April spelling words! I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing Spring Break! I will admit - I miss the kiddos after a week of vacation. I cannot believe we only have 5 weeks left of school! Ahh so much to do and so little time! Here's what this week will look like: Monday in Cougar's Call time we will have a quick morning meeting and I will have a quick conference with students regarding science projects. Tuesday and Friday will be used to work on vocabulary and spelling. On Wednesday morning students will begin Literacy MAP testing and on Thursday morning students will begin Math MAP testing. Please make sure your child has a plenty of rest the night before and big breakfast on those mornings so their brains are ready to show all that knowledge! In Math we will be learning about measurement. We will start the week by using exploring weight in grams, pounds, ounces. Our goal for this unit is to be better able to estimate weights as well as convert measurements. In Literacy we are continuing EOG prep. This week will focus on narrative nonfiction. Our goals for the week will be reading narrative text to understand the characters and his/her challenges as well as comprehending the facts that come with the nonfiction aspect of the text. On Tuesday we will not swap for Literacy. In Integrated Studies we are finishing up our class part of the science project. Work that is not done Monday in class time will be sent home to complete by the Tuesday afternoon deadline. All projects are due Tuesday! To celebrate the end of the unit and see all the hard work put into these animal adaption structures, I would like to invite parents to come tour our classroom Tuesday afternoon from 1:45 - 2:15. We will not swap for Literacy on Tuesday, instead we will spend the first part of that time preparing our desk for a 4th grade walk through. After our tour of the other rooms, parents are invited to come see our class projects and ask questions about our North Carolina animals and their adaptions. Let me know if you have any questions! Hope to see you Tuesday! I'm writing to you from the '17 Staff Retreat in Myrtle Beach! The weather is nice and the team is crunching away on plans for these awesome 4th graders! We are on the home stretch until spring break! Here's what this short week will look like:
In Cougar's Call on Monday and Wednesday we will work on vocabulary and spelling work. On Tuesday we will take a Math Cycle Assessment. This test is not for a grade, but for district data. On Thursday we will swap for targeted math instruction. In Math we are wrapping up our multiplication and division unit. Students have started working on the study guide in class. After working on the problems independently, we are reviewing the problems as a class. I will send the study guide home Wednesday with students. They can review it one more time with you at home, then the test will be Thursday morning. If you'd rather see the study guide earlier, let me know. I wanted to make sure students get the answers correct, and understand how to work each problem. Doing a few problems at a time is easier to process. In Literacy we are wrapping up EOG prep on folktales and fables. We will take an informal quiz on folktales on Wednesday. This week we are going to use writing time to work on our science project writing. In Integrated Studies, we are working on our project all week. On Friday, students brought home a green piece of paper that told you more about our science project and listed their animal that they are going to be studying. Let me know if you have any questions about creating the structure. The projects are due Tuesday, April 18th. We will have a science test to wrap up this unit on the April 21st. HOMEWORK: -Math Study Guide (done in class) -Study multiplication and division strategies for test! (Khan Academy is a great resource!
