We made it to the 3-day weekend! We had a blast at our Fall Party! Thank you everyone for contributing. Here's a look at next week:
On Tuesday and throughout the week during Cougar's Call time we will continue our research on the early Native Americans in North Carolina. On Friday we will have a fall science lab where we will learn why the leaves on trees change color! In Math time we will wrap up our study on Area. We will have an informal math test on Area Tuesday. On Wednesday we start moving into solving multiplication equations using multiple methods such as arrays, pictures, and story problems. On Friday students will have an informal quiz on solving large multiplication equations. Students should be comfortable with breaking up large numbers into smaller "chunks" that they know and then multiplying. For example if given the problem, 14x5, students could break the problem up into: (7x5) + (7x5) = 70 (8x5) + (6x5) = 70 (2x5) + (12x5) = 70 The hope is that they pick out numbers that they are comfortable multiplying, and then they can solve bigger problems. This week is a wonderful week to review and quiz your child on their multiplication facts. The quicker they can recite 1-12 facts, the better! In Literacy this week we will learn about nonfiction text structures. Some structures we will look into include: comparisons, order/sequence, problem/solution, cause/effect, and chronological time. During our Writing time, students will have the opportunity to write a creative piece about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his relevance in the 21st Century. Our whole school is participating in this district wide contest. Winners will be recognized on National Observance Day at Central Piedmont Community College. In Integrated Studies we will continue learning about the early Natives of North Carolina and the Lost Colony. On Friday at 3:00 there is a Character Assembly. Announcements: 10/31 - NO SCHOOL 11/1 - SmashBurger Spirit Night at 5:00 11/4 - Walk to School Day & Character Assembly at 3:00 11/8 - No School Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda -30 minutes of Math practice on Compass Learning or another approved link (check links tab) -Practice multiplication facts. Students should be able to answer the fact in 3 seconds or less!

Good Afternoon C3 Families,
This week was definitely one for the books! We had Book Fair, pictures, Biz-Town, and clubs. Whew, I don't know about you, but I am exhausted and looking forward to a somewhat normal week again next week! Here's what we have to look forward to: In Cougar's Call time we will start the week off with our formal Math Test Monday morning. The other days will be split working on the new math and integrated studies units (see info. below). On Friday we will start our day with a spelling Test on the October spelling words. This is a formal grade and worth big points! Finally we will have some fun with a Science lab on density. Students will predict and observe if certain types of candy will sink or float. On Monday in Math we will continue testing. Starting Tuesday we will begin a new unit on area. This is a very quick unit (only 1 week long!) We will look into solving area of regular and irregular figures using multiplication. Because we are beginning to move quickly in math, I am now requiring all students to work at least 30 minutes each night on Compass Learning. If you need help logging on, please go to the links tab on this site or contact me for more information. Remember, Compass Learning is a course leveled for each student's strengths and weaknesses. I have specifically assigned certain types of problems for each of my lovely 25 students. In Literacy we will switch gears and begin our study on nonfiction texts! Beginning Monday, we will compare fiction vs. nonfiction texts and discuss nonfiction text features. Here are some of the features your child will learn: Table Of Contents, Diagram, Chart, Graphic Organizer, Photograph, Caption, Index, Glossary On Wednesday, students that made below an 80% on the Unit 1 Literacy Test will retest. The remainder of the week will introduce main idea and supporting details. Friday during the last part of our Literacy time we will have our Fall Party! In Integrated Studies we will wrap up our first IB unit and reflect on what we have learned. Starting Tuesday we will begin our new unit. Here are our two focus questions for the week: What do I know about North Carolina's early history? What were the early Native Americans like in North Carolina? As we read and learn about early North Carolina history, student will work on a brochure in which they will list facts about the Native Americans of each region. Announcements: 10/21 - Parents Night Out at the Improper Pig 10/25 Smashburger Spirit Night 10/28 - Fall Party at 2:00! and Last Day of First Quarter 10/31 - No School Homework: Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda each night 30 minutes of Compass Learning each night Practice October Spelling Words - Test Friday! Did I mention how awesome C3 parents are?! Last week Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Reule surprised me with a beautiful birthday cake. I'm smiling just thinking about how awesome that was! Also, a huge thank you to Mrs. Reule for taking time out of her busy day to come in and lead a character lesson for the kiddos Wednesday morning. Finally, thank you to our BizTown volunteers - Mr. Evers, Mrs. Hayes, Mrs. Paone, and Mrs. Staley. It was such a memorable experience. I know the kids had a blast and it was all because of you guys! I am the luckiest teacher in the world and I could not do it without you all! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Have a great weekend, Tomi Happy Friday C3 Families!
I have truly enjoyed meeting with you all this past week. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me and talk! This week was a bit hectic with the Early Release day and conferences, but it's good practice because next week is even crazier! Here's what we have to look forward to: In Cougar's Call we will be alternating between reviewing current Math (rounding, place value, comparing numbers with <, >, =, addition/subtraction with numbers up to 100,000) and Literacy (traits, theme, summarizing) for the upcoming tests. Literacy Unit 1 test is Friday, October 21st and Math Unit 5 will be Monday, October 24th. Both assessments will be formal grades and heavily wighted. In Math next week we will go over the multiple methods of subtraction. Students will review the basics, then apply using numbers up to 100,000. On Wednesday, students will take an informal quiz numbers up to 100,000. On Friday Math Study Guides are due. We will review the packet as a class. Students will take the study guides back home over the weekend to study for the test Monday. In Literacy we will focus on Close Reading (a skill that enables students to think about the text in a thoughtful and methodically manner.) Throughout the week they will be text detectives that must highlight important information and may be necessary in order to summarize the text or identify the theme. The formal Literacy assessment is on Friday! (If you and your child would like some extra study time, list some of your favorite movies or books of all time together. Try to identify some of the common themes or verbally have your child summarize.) In Integrated Studies we are trying to fit in all the Biz-Town units before the big day! Now that students know what their job will be at Biz-Town, they will meet with other 4th grade students in their same business. Students will continue to practice writing checks, balancing accounts, and learning how to organize a successful business. On Thursday we will go to Biz-Town! On Friday students will have their first club day from 3:15-4:00! ANNOUNCEMENTS: 10/17 - Students may purchase books at the Book Fair Monday morning during Cougar's Call time. Please tell your child to keep their money in a safe place until the book fair! 10/18 - PTA Meet & Eat 10/19 - Fall Pictures are Wednesday at 1:45! Students should wear their school uniform. 10/20 - Biz-Town Field Trip is Thursday! Students should have a lunch packed in a disposable bag with their name clearly labeled on the outside! Also, students should wear their school uniform and be at school on time! Busses leave at 9:30 and we cannot wait for late students. 10/21 - Clubs meet from 3:15 - 4:00 & Life logs are due HOMEWORK: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it an agenda -Math Study Guide (due Friday) -Study October Spelling Words (expensive, governor, impression, depression, independence, submarine, transportation, unfinished) Test will be on 10/28 -OPTIONAL this week but still encouraged - Compass Learning (go to the links section on this website to find out how to log on!) As always, let me know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful weekend! Tomi Happy Friday! As October 20th gets closer we are gearing up to go to Biz Town! Since I've never been, I started researching what to expect, and it looks pretty cool. Here's a video explaining what we will get to do for the day at Biztown! It's kind of cheesy, but I have no doubt the kids will have a blast!
http://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/public-juniorachievement-org/videos/program/ja-biztown-video.mp4 Looking into next week: During Cougar's Call we will start our BizTown Lessons on Finance. We will learn about checking and savings accounts and learn how to balance checkbooks and/or accounts. In Math we will continue Unit 5 on Landmark Numbers. We will take numbers into the ten and hundred thousands and work on place value, rounding, and addition strategies. If your child needs additional math practice, go to the 'links' page on this site to learn more about logging onto Compass Learning which is geared specifically for each student's level and goals. I have also added additional helpful links to math games and websites to ensure that your child feels confident! We have a busy week coming up in Language Arts. On Monday we will have an informal assessment on summarizing. (Remind students to use the "hand method"). Tuesday and Thursday will be used for review. We will have small groups in the room traveling to different centers to practice traits & emotions, theme, and summarizing texts. Additionally, I will have a small group work with me to check for understanding and prepare for the Formal Assessment on Friday. In Writing, students will review the 5 parts of a letter (I'm a real stickler when it comes to correct letter format!) Each student will write a letter to a friend and a letter to the "Editor" that will actually be delivered to them at BizTown! Our Integrated Studies time will be moved to the morning Cougar's Call to make time for our class to fire Raku on Monday and Tuesday. If you have the time, come join us outside from 2:15-3:00! By the end of the week, we will continue our BizTown Lessons on the Flow of the Economy and Taxes. Announcements: Conferences start this week! If anyone would be willing to bring in a box of crackers (graham, saltine, ritz, etc.) or individually wrapped snacks, you would be doing our class a true favor! I cannot thank all of you enough for your support and encouragement. I have absolutely fallen in love with this group of kids and can't wait to share how much they've already grown with you at your conference! See you soon! -Tomi Please pick a time to meet with me for about 20 minutes to discuss your child's academic progress.
