Good Afternoon! Here's the plan for next week:
Cougar's Call: Students will receive their new spelling words for the month of March as well as a wordly wise 6 packet for the month. These will be due on Thursday 3/29 before spring break. On Monday and Wednesday we will go over the new vocabulary and spelling words for the month. On Tuesday and Thursday we will switch for targeted math instruction. MARCH SPELLING WORDS: forecast, midnight, overpower, semifinal, supermarkets, underweight, antisocial Math: We are spending a little more time on fractions. Adding and subtracting mixed numbers has been very difficult for many students. Please let me know if you would like additional practice for your child at home. Next week we are going to look at line plots. This skill will build on adding and subtracting fractions as well. Literacy: We are officially getting into the nitty gritty of EOG preparation! This week we are focusing on note taking and annotations of a text while looking carefully at the details of a text. Students should be able to refer back to a text's details to make inferences. Integrated Studies: We are continuing our Science unit. This week we will learn about ecosystems and biomes. By the end of the week students will learn about producers, consumers, and decomposers and how they relate to the food chain and food webs in their ecosystem. HOMEWORK: -Topic 11 Study Guide -Read two and a half hours and log in agenda ANNOUNCEMENTS: 3/6 - Celebration of Action and Culture 6-8 3/9 - Spring Pictures (no uniform) 3/16 - Raleigh Field Trip! Look in your child's cougar folder for important information on what time students need to be at school and what they can bring/wear!

On Another full week down! Thank you Mrs. Purdy for being flexible and coming in on Monday to teach us about how important reputations are! Here's what next week looks like:
Cougar's Call: On Tuesday and Thursday we will swap for targeted math instruction. On these days we will focus on time and elapsed time to start preparing for the EOG exams! Feel free to quiz your child in free time about elapsed time as well :) Monday and Friday will be used to review persuasive writing as well as finish up spelling or wordly wise packets which are due on Friday for an informal grade. Math: On Monday we have our formal Unit 9 test. On this test, students will add and subtract fractions, and change improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Please let me know if your child needs extra help with this unit. Friday students will have an informal "test" on Unit 10. Literacy: Having wrapped up historical fiction, we are going to move into reading and analyzing poetry this week. In writing, students are working on a Integrated Studies: We are continuing our science unit this week. We start the week by talking about the geologic eras. Students will be able to connect the Earth stressors (Ice Age, Global Warming, Erosion, etc.) to the animals and plants that lived in each era. The rest of the week we will talk about fossils, vertebrates and invertebrates. Cougar's Call: Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be used for word work and spelling practice. On Tuesday and Thursday we will swap for targeted math instruction. Math: On Monday and Tuesday we will take notes and learn how to change fractions from mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa. On Wednesday we will add mixed numbers, Thursday we will subtract mixed numbers and Friday we will review the Math Unit 9 Study Guide. The Unit 9 formal test will be Monday, 2/26. Literacy: Now that we've wrapped up our historical fiction book club, next week we'll take the fiction from the story and research the history from the book's time period. We will read nonfiction articles from the time period and connect those events to our book club stories. Integrated Studies: We are starting a new Science unit! We will get into animal adaptions and stresses that affect the Earth this week. HOMEWORK: Math Unit 9 Study Guide - DUE FRIDAY 2/23! This unit is about adding, subtracting and simplifying fractions with the same denominator. Thursday and Friday will be used to wrap up discussions and reading logs on the unit. Integrated Studies: We will finish the government simulation and reflect on what we have learned over the course of the unit on how our government was made, amended, and still changes throughout time. The test will be Friday, March 2nd. They will start their monthly spelling menu and Wordly Wise. Those will be due on March 2nd. On Tuesday we will swap for targeted math instruction. The other days will be used to catch up on writing and Integrated Studies work.
Math: In math this week we are wrapping up Unit 8 on equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. On Monday we will compare fractions using a number line. Tuesday and Wednesday we will use what we know about comparing fractions to solve in word problems. Thursday we will review the Unit 8 study guide. Please be sure that your child brings in the study guide Thursday! On Friday students will take the Unit 8 Assessment for a formal grade. Literacy: We are continuing our historical fiction book club unit this week. This week we will discuss symbolism, minor characters, tone and mood. In Writing students are continuing their persuasive writing papers. Students should now have an introduction, body and concluding paragraph drafted. We will revise and edit this week and publish to turn in by Monday, 2/12. While we have had time to work in class, students may need to bring their drafts home to revise, edit or publish before the due date. Ask your child how their paper is going :) Integrated Studies: Last Friday we discussed the three branches of government in the United States. This week we will discuss the three branches of government here in North Carolina. Students will begin the week researching the leaders of our state. Then they will get to decide which branch of government they think they would work best in. The later part of the week we will hold a government simulation where we try to pass a new class rule! This simulation will show students how bills become laws.
