Sorry this is another late post! Here's what's going on this week in C3:
In Cougar's Call this week we will be focusing on word work and preparing for the spelling test Friday! On Thursday we will begin swapping for our fraction group targeted instruction. Also student's will begin their Literacy Cycle 3 Assessment for the district. This test is likely to continue into Literacy time Friday as well. In Math, we are continuing studying fractions. Monday will focus on fractions in word problems. While students are able to create halves and thirds within one piece of something, we want students to see that fractions can also be within a group. (E.g. What fraction of the class is wearing red today?) By Wednesday we will begin to compare fractions, and on Friday we will begin adding fractions. This unit moves quickly, so please have your child complete the math homework and if needed, spend additional time using one of the math resources in the 'Helpful Links' tab. (I think Compass Learning and Khan Academy are great, but there are many other sites out there! Let me know if you need help finding some additional practice for your child!) In Literacy we will continue information nonfiction study. We are beginning to talk now about the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. Perspective or point of view is still a major focus this week as we examine difficult texts and try to fully understand the material. In Writing we will continue persuasive writing. As your child about what topic they are chosen! Some topics are very interesting and I can't wait to hear how they defend their opinion! Our Integrated Studies time this week will relate to our Literacy. We are now looking into the causes of the Civil War and what role North Carolina had during this time. We will also focus on the +80 battles that took place in North Carolina. Announcements: -1/31 NAEP testing (Envelopes went home at the beginning of the month for students that will participate in this national assessment over the day. We have about 1/3 of the class participating. Students not testing will stay in class with me and review material learned throughout the previous week.) -2/2 - Fraction Groups begin during Cougar's Call -2/3 - Spelling Test & Literacy Cycle 3 Assessment, IMIB Assembly @ 3:00 -2/6 - Report Cards go home! 2/6-2/10 Staff Appreciation Week! -2/10 - Daddy-Daughter Dance Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda! -Math Packet -Literacy Packet (time spent on Literacy packet can go towards reading for the week!)

Hi guys! Sorry this post is a little later than usual - I'm feeling a little under the weather this weekend. Crossing my fingers it's just a cold though! So far, this is the plan for the week:
In Cougar's Call Monday we have Literacy MAP testing. On Tuesday students will take a pretest on the new math unit, Unit 6, on fractions. Wednesday and Thursday will be used for additional Integrated Studies time. Finally, on Friday students will take the Literacy Cycle 3 Assessment. In Math this week we are launching into fractions. The beginning of the week we will look at halves, fourths and eighths. The later part of the week we will learn about thirds and sixths. One page of the homework this week has some fraction practice. If your child needs additional practice as we get started, please let me know! In Literacy we are still focusing on informational nonfiction text. This week we will take a look into perspective and points of view. My literacy swap group has been working with text centered around the American Revolution. This week we will see that there are 2 sides to the story. It's kind of fun! In Writing we are continuing our persuasive writing. Students have an idea for a hook, now they must explain their reasoning. In Integrated Studies the focus question of the week is, What are the rights of North Carolinians based on our Constitution? We will talk a bit about the constitution before moving into North Carolina's role in the Civil War. Announcements: -1/23 MAP Testing -1/27 Cycle 3 Assessment & Clubs -2/6-2/10 Staff Appreciation Week -2/10 Daddy Daughter Dance Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda -Literacy Packet -Math Packet I will be out of the classroom on Tuesday for a training, but I will still be at school. Plans should stay the same, but I'll let you know otherwise. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week! Good Afternoon C3 Families,
I hope you are enjoying your weekend. We have a lot of important dates coming up, so make sure to mark your calendars! Here's what this week will look like: In Cougar's Call Tuesday we will wrap up our targeted learning Geometry groups. On Wednesday Mrs. Hall is coming to teach an IMIB lesson! On Thursday morning we will begin MAP testing. Make sure your student has a good night of sleep and eats a good breakfast so they can do their personal best! Finally, on Friday we will work on vocabulary, spelling, and cursive! We started cursive last week and the kids are loving it! Ask your child to show you the "clock climber" letters (a, c, d, g, and o). In Math this week we will continue reviewing perimeter (the measure around an object) and area (the measure inside a figure). Because there is no math packet this week for homework, I encourage students to get on khan academy and watch the videos and complete the quizzes to prepare for our formal Geometry test on Friday. Here is a link to 4th grade geometry practice - https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fourth-grade-math/cc-4th-geometry-topic In Literacy we will look back into nonfiction, but this time focusing on expository and informational. We will use nonfiction to dive deeper into our studies on the Revolutionary War. In Writing we will be introduced to persuasive writing. We will spend the week writing introduction, body and concluding paragraphs that ultimately try to convince people of something. In Integrated Studies we will continue our studies on North Carolina's role in the American Revolution. Students started working on a mini-project last week about some of the major events that happened in North Carolina that shaped the outcome of the war. They will continue to work in class on Tuesday and will present their findings on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday we will learn about the impact of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution on North Carolina. -HOMEWORK- Due Friday, 1/20 *Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda (I'm still checking agendas and giving credits to students that remember to log their reading times, so please keep encouraging this habit!) *Literacy Packet *30 minutes of math practice on Khan Academy -ANNOUNCEMENTS- 1/19 - MAP Testing 1/20 - Formal Geometry Test & Homework Due 1/23 - MAP Testing & Last day of Quarter 1/24 - Make up snow day 1/27 - Cycle 3 Assessment & Clubs Due to the snow days, we are bumping our lesson plans 2 days. Here's some things that have changed:
-We will have our Historical Fiction Formal test on Friday morning instead of tomorrow. The Geometry study guide is still due Friday but we will wait to review the study guide until early next week. Remember group picture day is tomorrow at 1:30. Students should wear their uniforms. Check the Weekly Update 1/6 below for announcements and updates for this week. Best, Tomi Hi again! We had a very fun week full of experiments and learning! I am overwhelmed with how many parents/grandparents took time out of their day to come read to us in class! THANK YOU! Also, another thank you to parents for donating supplies Friday! See some pictures from our Science-A-Thon where students had to construct a chair using only newspaper and tape. Lots of hard work and thinking went into that experiment and it was very entertaining!
Here's what's going on this week: In Cougar's Call on Tuesday and Thursday we will continue our targeted Geometry instruction. Other days will be used for vocabluary and grammar practice. In Math we will wrap up our Geometry unit. We will review triangles, quadrilaterals and symmatry. We will finish the week by revisiting area and perimeter. In Literacy we are ending our historical fiction unit. We will use what we learned from our book clubs to close read a shorter historical fiction piece that will help prepare students for the formal assessment. We will review main idea/supporting details, summarizing, setting and plot. On Wednesday we will not swap for literacy,(we have group pictures during this time!) but instead we will take a formal assessment. In Integrated Studies we are beginning a new unit focusing on North Carolina's role in the American Revolution. This weeks focus will be on 5 distict groups that played a special role in the outcome of the Revolution: Edenton Tea Party, Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, Halifax Resolves, Battle of King's Mountain, and Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Students will have the opporutnity to research one of these groups and present their findings to the class on Thursday. Homework - due Friday! -Literacy Packet (time spent working on this packet can go towards reading time) -Math Study Guide -Read 2 and a half hours and lot it in agenda Announcements: -1/9-1/13 - Science Fair -1/11 - Group class picture at 1:30 (Uniform Required) -1/13 - Early Release Day at 1:15 -1/16 - No School (MLK Day) -1/27 - Friday Clubs *Last week I sent permission slips home for the Raleigh field trip in March. Let me know if you have any questions about the trip and/or volunteering! Have a great week! Tomi I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! I am back and ready for 2017! This week will be a bit different than normal as we settle back into our old routines.
Wednesday is Read-A-Thon! Students may wear PJs to school if they bring in a dollar. We will be spending the day doing a handful of activities centered around reading! No parents/grandparents/family members have signed up to come and read a favorite read aloud to the class yet! Please come share your passion for reading with these awesome kids if you have time! Even just 10 minutes of your time is appreciated! I also invite students to bring a favorite book from home tomorrow that they may want to share with their 1st grade book buddies! Thursday is Math-A-Thon! Again, a full day centered around math activites. From tangrams, to puzzles, and coding, this day is sure to get student's minds back into thinking mode! And finally Friday is Science-A-Thon! I am super excited for this day, but I need your help! One experiment requires students to build their own chair using only newspaper and tape. This will be an ongoing craft throughout the day and should be pretty amusing. Can you please bring in all extra newspaper and tape that you can find? We want to make this fun, but I don't have enough paper and tape for all 25 students. If you have any other science experiements you would like to share with me, shoot me an email! You're also welcome to come in and show us some science as well! Announcements: *New Year, New Homework. The 4th grade team has decided to step up our homework game. Each week, students will be sent home with a math and literacy packet. Students will have the week to complete the homework and return on Fridays. I will send out more information in the next newsletter. 1/6 - Character Assembly from 3-3:30 1/11 - Group Class Picture (Uniform Required) 1/13 - Early Release Day @ 1:15 1/16 - No School Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda. -Complete 30 minutes of Compass Learning or approved Math practice each night. Please send me an email, if you can volunteer or bring in extra newspaper/tape supplies! Thanks for your help! Tomi |
