Cougar's Call: Monday and Wednesday we will work on word work and vocabulary. Wordly Wise 3 and the Spelling Menu will be due Friday 12/1. We will also have our spelling test Friday morning for an informal grade. On Tuesday and Thursday we will swap for additional math support. Math: Monday and Tuesday we will introduce long division. This goes quickly so I highly recommend additional practice on Khan Academy www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic-home/multiply-divide/mult-digit-div-2/v/division-2 On Wednesday we will have a quick quiz on division to check for understanding. A study guide for this unit is going home Monday. The Topic 5 Math test is on Tuesday 12/5. Please encourage your child to practice these facts at home too! Literacy: On Monday we will take a Formal Test on reading nonfiction. With research drafts turned in, students now have the opportunity to show what they know! The will read a nonfiction/informational passage and answer questions about that passage. We will spend the remainder of the week making corrections to research papers and looking at the formal test from Monday. Integrated Studies: Monday and Tuesday are the very last days to finish up the Footprints project! We will make final corrections to journals and rehearse for the oral presentation portion of the project. On Wednesday from 3-3:30 you are invited to come in and see all of the structures and hear a journal or two from a person in history! On Thursday we will wrap up this unit with a test about North Carolina history. On Friday we have a Character Assembly. Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you all have a wonderful holiday! I'm thankful for this wonderful group of 4th graders. It has been such a great year! Thank you for letting me spend my day with them :)
Cougar's Call: Monday we will work on vocabulary, spelling and word work. Tuesday we will switch for flexible math groups. Math: We are continuing to practice division. Over the holiday, please continue to practice multiplication facts. These facts are helpful when doing the inverse (division). In class we will do a little project based learning! We have a fun activity involving sweet potatoes and math! Literacy: Research papers are due Tuesday! We will spend class Monday and Tuesday putting the final touches on these papers. Integrated Studies: We are continuing to write journal entries from the perspective of a person in history for the footprints project. The unit is an inquiry into the life and times of people who left their marks on our state’s history. Students will identify a person from early North Carolina history and take on their persona. It can be a Native American, English settler, or pirate, a real person, or fictitious. Regardless of the character, they must be from North Carolina. Listed below are the steps your child should follow to complete his/her project successfully. The model/structure needs to be completed AT HOME! The journal entries and oral presentation will be completed in school.
In addition to the structure, students must also create a label for their structure that states the structure’s name (i.e. Longhouse, Log Cabin etc.), the occupant’s name, and the approximate year. The students actual name should also be on the label. Reminder to students:

Project Due Date: Structures are due Wednesday, November 29th. On tshis day, we will have an open house from 3:00-3:30. Parents are invited to see the structures and hear the presentations across the grade level. Grading: Students will receive four grades for this project: the structure, one journal entries, oral presentation, and reflection. You will find the rubrics and checklists for each component attached in this packet. Your child should read these over so that they understand what will earn an “A”. **Only Projects turned in ON TIME will be graded!! If it is turned in late, it will drop a letter grade each day! Grading Scale: 90-100 points = A 80-89 points = B 70-79 points = C 60-69 points = D Below 60 = F Pacing of In-Class Portion of Project: Monday, November 13, 2017: The teacher will introduce the project in detail and answer any questions. Students will begin to brainstorm who they want to be and the details for that person. Tuesday, November 14, 2017 and Wednesday, November 15, 2017: Students will fill out the sheet detailing their character. We will also look at some Primary Sources of famous journals to give students an idea of how their journals should look. Students will map out their 5 days of journal entries using graphic organizers. November 15-27, 2017: On these days, students will complete one journal entry a day in class. They will need to practice the journal entry for their presentation at home on these days. Tuesday, November 28, 2017: Students will finalize all parts of their journal and practice their oral presentation in class. Wednesday, November 29, 2017: Structures are due and students will give presentations. Please be aware that due to limited space in classrooms, a majority of projects will go home this day as well. Cougar's Call: On Monday we are finishing up as detectives solving the case of the lost colony of Roanoke. Tuesday and Thursday are flexible math group meeting time and Wednesday will be used to work on vocabulary and spelling practice. Math: This week we are moving into Topic 5: Division. We will heavily focus this week on understanding fact families to understand division. For example, 8x3=24 so 24 divided by 3=8. On Friday students will take a quick quiz as an informal grade to check for understanding. Literacy: We are using this week to continue researching a chosen topic. Next week students will start writing their research paper on this topic. While writing, students will need to remember the writing process in order to draft, edit, revise and publish their finished work for a grade. Integrated Studies: We are starting our Footprints in History project! Students will take the perspective of a Native American, Explorer, Pirate, or Colonist from North Carolina. Students will write journal entries from their chosen character's perspective during class time. At home, students will make a structure of the home of that person. You will get more information on this project on Monday in Cougar Folders. We just wrapped up our discussion on Native Americans of North Carolina and started discussing some of the earliest European explorers that came to North Carolina. Ask your child to show you their blabberize on their chosen explorer- they're so funny! Next week is another short week - here's what we have planned:

Math: Next week we are wrapping up our multiplication unit. We will work most of next week on word problems to prepare for the formal unit test Thursday. The study guide is due Wednesday so we can discuss tricky problems. Literacy: In Literacy groups students will begin a research project. Students will research, note take, and write a research paper on a topic of their choice. Each day will have a different focus so that students understand every step of the research. Integrated Studies: On Monday we will learn more about the pirates that came to North Carolina! The rest of the week we will investigate the lost colony of Roanoke. Students will act like CSI detectives to solve the case of where and why the colonists vanished!
