Math: This week's sole lesson will be comparing fractions. By the end of the week students should feel comfortable with recognizing equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and comparing fractions. Literacy: This week our literacy class is moving back into reading fiction! Knowing what we know about history (American Revolution, Civil War, etc.) we will now focus on reading historical fiction. More specifically, students will take the week to compare and contrast different points of view among characters in different stories. Students will have an exit ticket for an informal grade this week. Writing: This week students will learn the basics on writing narratives. They will work each day on their narratives. Integrated Studies: Last week students started researching different biomes around the world. This week, we will take that a step further and learn about the natural disasters that occur within each biome. Students will work on a group project to tell about the natural stressors on earth's environment. Math: Next week we will continue Unit 8 on fractions. This week students should feel comfortable with identifying and naming equivalent fractions. On Friday students that need to retest on Topic 7 will retest. Literacy: This week students will continue to review finding the main idea and details, vocabulary strategies, and comparing and contrasting two different texts on the same topic. On Thursday students will retest if needed on these standards. Writing: Students will be working on writing about environmental changes that impact nature. They should be comfortable with writing paragraphs and using the writing process to edit their work. Integrated Studies: We are beginning our new unit, Sharing the Planet. In this unit we will learn about the ecosystems and how the Earth has changed through time. Math: We are taking everything we know about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and putting it into multi-step word problems. Students were given a study guide. The study guide is due Tuesday. Students will take a formal test on Topic 6 on Wednesday. Literacy: This week we will wrap up our vocabulary strategies and have a formal assessment on Thursday during literacy time. Writing: We will spend the week reviewing our spelling. We will also work on homophone activities to help students understand that homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. Integrated Studies: Students are continuing to work on their end of the unit project. This project helps student understand our state government, constitution, and their rights and responsibilities as citizens. The project will be due for an informal grade on Thursday. Math: This week students will continue to practice division and retest by Friday. Students will also use what they know about multiplication and division to start Topic 6 - word problems! Yay! We'll work on this throughout the week as well. Literacy: We are learning all about vocabulary strategies this week! Each day will focus on a different strategy for tackling tricky vocabulary. We will use synonyms, antonyms, context clues, and common homophones to help! Writing: Students are continuing to practice writing informational essays. I find that many students still struggle with topic and concluding sentences. (This can be practiced at home verbally! Let me know if you need ideas to help your child!) This week students will write an informational piece on the three branches of government. Each day we will work on a separate paragraph. Again, students that do not finish will have homework! Integrated Studies: This week students will finish up their class government simulation. Students have been learning how a bill becomes a law. They will finally pass a law in our classroom this week! Math: This week students will continue to focus on division. Over the week, they will learn different strategies to use to divide multi-digit numbers as well as interpret remainders. On Thursday students will review their math study guide (their homework for the week). On Friday students will take a formal test on division. Literacy: Over the week students will integrate information from two separate texts. They will compare and contrast these different texts and be able to discuss the similarities and differences. Writing: Because our 3-paragraph essay on the American Revolution is for a formal grade, we will spend the week editing and revising so that all students have the opportunity to make a 70% of higher. Essays are graded on their knowledge of the topic, having 3 paragraphs, giving relevant information and facts in the paper, using engaging facts, and having correct spelling and punctuation. Students that already scored above a 79% will have the opportunity to have a genius hour. Genius hour will give students a chance to research and write about anything they're interested in! I've been excited to try this for a few weeks now and hope it inspires some of them to get into writing! Math: This week we are focusing on division strategies. Over the week, students will learn multiple methods to divide multi-digit numbers with remainders. Literacy: Using nonfiction text, students will continue reading about the time period following the American Revolution and the causes of the Civil War. Students will focus on the timeline of events in order to better understand this period in history. Writing: Students will create a 3 paragraph essay on the causes, battles, and aftermath of the American Revolution. Please note that if your child does not finish this essay, they will be required to work on it as homework throughout the week. This is due Friday 2/1 for a writing grade. This writing piece will also be considered when grading content, fluency, and conventions. Integrated Studies: This week students will learn about the causes of the Civil War as well as the Reconstruction Era after the war. We are slowly preparing for our Raleigh field trip and learning about our own state's constitution and laws! Please let me know if your child needs additional practice. Literacy: We will continue focusing on nonfiction standards while integrating the American Revolution into our reading. On Tuesday students will take a formal assessment on these nonfiction standards. They should be comfortable with finding the main idea, details, author's purpose, text structure, and firsthand/secondhand accounts. Integrated Studies: We will start the week with learning about taxation without representation and how it led to the American Revolution. In this unit our class will focus on the battles that took place in North Carolina. Throughout the week student will be researching and presenting about an important event or battle that took place during the American Revolution. The presentation will be taken for an informal grade on Friday 1/18. Math: On Monday and Tuesday we will wrap up Topic 1. On Wednesday, students will take a formal assessment on Topic 1 (place value, rounding, etc.) On Thursday we will begin our next unit (Topic 2) on adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. This unit moves quickly! We will take the formal assessment on Topic 2 on Monday 12/17. Please have your child complete math homework for this quick moving unit. Also, use Khan Academy as an additional resource if needed :) Literacy: In literacy we will be learning how authors use reasons and evidence to explain their point of view. On Thursday students that made below an 80% on their Quarter 2 Formal 2 test last week will have the opportunity to retest for a higher grade. Throughout the week students may have homework and classwork for a grade! Writing/Integrated Studies: Each day this week students will be working on the in class portion of the Footprints Project. In class they will be required for write 5 journal entries from the perspective of their Native American, explorer, or colonist. They will also revise, edit and publish their work.
