Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. I realized that I have more announcements than when I last updated the site, so here's so quick news:
Today in Cougar Folder's I sent home the Unit 3 Math Study Guide. We will go over the packet this Friday, 12/2. Other homework this week includes working on the Footprints Project. Let me know if you need any help with this!

Hi C3 Families,
Sorry for the delay, I am trying to get everything ready for Thanksgiving Break over on my end. Here is what we have to look forward to over the next few weeks: In Cougar's Call we will be alternating between Integrated Studies, and Math. Students will also be given time to catch up on assignments and/or study for math, spelling, literacy. In Math this week we will focus on factors, multiples, prime, and composite numbers. Students last week wrote these terms in their agenda. Please have them review these important concepts over the break. They will need to know them for the test. (You can even quiz them by asking: What are the factors of 24? Which of those factors are prime? Which are composite?) After the break, we will move on to multiplying 2-digit numbers. I will show students multiple methods. One method that may help students is the break apart method where larger numbers can be broken up into numbers that are easier to multiply. For example, when multiplying 15x13, we will break 15 up into 10 + 5. We can't break up 13 (because it's prime) but now we can multiply (10x13) + (5x13). In Literacy, we are still focusing on nonfiction where we are reading text closely to identify text structures, main ideas and supporting details. Now that students are beginning to get comfortable close reading, we will introduce expository and narrative nonfictions texts to the lessons. In Writing, students will continue working on their journal entries. In Integrated Studies, we will introduce the Footprints In History Project. (The project information will be sent home in Cougar Folder's on Monday.) Now that we have learned about the Native Americans, early settlers, and pioneers of North Carolina, students will have the opportunity to pick a character, time period, and imagine what a day in the life of that person would have been like. This is a 2 part project. The writing part of the project will be done at school and the other hands-on part will be completed at home. It is very important that students are working on this project at home for homework each night. The project will be due, Tuesday, December 6th. After you have read the project information, please email or send me a message if you have questions. Announcements: -11/23 - 11/25 - No School -12/2 - Walk to School Day & Character Assembly -We need snacks in the classroom! If you have an extra box of saltines, graham crackers, pretzels, or individually wrapped snacks, please send them! We thank you for your generosity :) Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda -30 minutes of math practice on Compass Learning -Study November Spelling Words! (Test 12/2!) -Work on Foot Prints Project Here are some of the methods we have discussed for solving division problems. As long as students are comfortable using one of the methods (even methods not included below!) they will do fine! This is a tough skill to grasp, so I cannot stress how important it is to practice, practice, practice!

If I forget any announcements here I will send via Remind throughout the week!
In Cougar's Call we will be catching up on our Lost Colony research and opinion writing. Students will also have time to complete word work and practice November spelling words. In Math we are still working towards learning strategies for division and solving multiplication and division word problems. I have given students the challenge of reciting the 6's,7's,8's,9's,11's, and 12's out loud to me at recess to receive a special treat from me! If they are able to skip count by these numbers without pausing longer than 3 seconds, they get a treat! I already had some try today! I truly cannot stress the importance of knowing the multiplication facts enough. This is a real world skill! In Literacy this week we will continue to build on text structures, main idea and supporting details. This week my Literacy group started a book club using grade level nonfiction texts. They were super excited to pick their book and be a part of a new club! These clubs will continue to focus on the skills that we learn about in whole group lessons. On Thursday and Friday next week we will introduce inferencing. Whether they know it or not, students make inferences all the time! Now we will put that skill to use when reading nonfiction text. In Writing we will continue learning how to correctly write a journal entry. We will switch from a Native American perspective to a European Settler. Students will write from their made up character's point of view and describe a day in the life of a European Settler in North Carolina. In Integrated Studies we will begin our studies on pirates focusing on Anne Bonny and Blackbeard. Students will research one of the pirates and create a pop-up, foldable paper project on their chosen pirate. Later in the week we will move through time and begin discussing the life of settlers of the Mountain region. ANNOUNCEMENTS: 11/15 - PTA Meeting & 4th Grade Performance at 7! 11/18 - Friday Clubs at 3:15 11/22 - Pie Day HOMEWORK: -Read 2 and a half hours and lot it in agenda -30 minutes of math practice on Compass Learning -Practice Multiplication Facts! *Also, we are running low on snacks again! Graham Crackers, Saltines, Ritz, or individually wrapped snacks are quick and easy to snack on! If you would like to donate, please send snacks next week! Thank you all! Have a wonderful weekend! Tomi Short week this week and an even shorter week next week. Where is the time going? I can't believe it's already November. I'm so proud of the work these kiddos continue to make every day. Give them a hug, they deserve it!
Next week during Cougar's Call time we will be working on spelling, vocabulary and word work. The spelling words for November are: beautiful classify community communities electricity happiness prettier your you're In Math on Monday we will take the Quarter 1 Test. This is not a graded test, but rather to check student progress. The rest of the week we will work on division strategies. We will learn multiple ways to work out a division problem and talk about remainders. We are focusing on fact families and strategies for dividing large numbers. (Fact Family Example with numbers 2, 3, 6. **2x3=6, 6/3=2 or 6/2=3.** All these numbers are used to get the product or quotient.) Keep having your child practice their multiplication facts so they are confident with all fact families from 0-12! In Literacy we will continue our nonfiction study. We will talk about text structures that help us determine why a text is written. Some of these structures include: description, comparing/contrasting, sequence/order, problem/solution, cause/effect, and chronological. On Friday we will have an informal quiz on identifying the main idea and structure of a nonfiction passage. In Writing we will begin our study on journal writing. In Integrated Studies we are moving chronologically from the Native Americans in North Carolina to the early European Settlers. We will spend the week discussing the Lost Colony and the possible outcomes of its inhabitants. Announcements: 11/8 - NO SCHOOL & SmashBurger Spirit Night 11/11 - No School Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda -30 minutes of Math practice on Compass Learning or another approved link (check links tab) -Practice multiplication facts. Students should be able to answer the fact in 3 seconds or less! |
