Good Afternoon! I want to send a HUGE, heartfelt thank you to the parents, students and families that have donated their time and gifts this past week. I feel so loved and appreciated! Thank YOU for being wonderful parents and helping teachers succeed!
Math: We are taking everything we know about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and putting it into multi-step word problems. Students were given a study guide. The study guide is due Tuesday. Students will take a formal test on Topic 6 on Wednesday. Literacy: This week we will wrap up our vocabulary strategies and have a formal assessment on Thursday during literacy time. Writing: We will spend the week reviewing our spelling. We will also work on homophone activities to help students understand that homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings. Integrated Studies: Students are continuing to work on their end of the unit project. This project helps student understand our state government, constitution, and their rights and responsibilities as citizens. The project will be due for an informal grade on Thursday. We'll work on this throughout the week as well. Literacy: We are learning all about vocabulary strategies this week! Each day will focus on a different strategy for tackling tricky vocabulary. We will use synonyms, antonyms, context clues, and common homophones to help! Writing: Students are continuing to practice writing informational essays. I find that many students still struggle with topic and concluding sentences. (This can be practiced at home verbally! Let me know if you need ideas to help your child!) This week students will write an informational piece on the three branches of government. Each day we will work on a separate paragraph. Again, students that do not finish will have homework! Math: This week students will continue to focus on division. Over the week, they will learn different strategies to use to divide multi-digit numbers as well as interpret remainders. On Thursday students will review their math study guide (their homework for the week). On Friday students will take a formal test on division. Literacy: Over the week students will integrate information from two separate texts. They will compare and contrast these different texts and be able to discuss the similarities and differences. Writing: Because our 3-paragraph essay on the American Revolution is for a formal grade, we will spend the week editing and revising so that all students have the opportunity to make a 70% of higher. Essays are graded on their knowledge of the topic, having 3 paragraphs, giving relevant information and facts in the paper, using engaging facts, and having correct spelling and punctuation. Students that already scored above a 79% will have the opportunity to have a genius hour. Genius hour will give students a chance to research and write about anything they're interested in! I've been excited to try this for a few weeks now and hope it inspires some of them to get into writing! Here's more information on genius hour: www.youtube.com/watch?v=COF-bqZuE-I Integrated Studies: This week we are moving from the Civil War. Students should understand that from the American Revolution we created our country's laws (the constitution) and the government and from the Civil War we now have amendments.
