Hello All!
Progress Reports were sent home today in your child's agenda. There are only a few grades thus far in the year, but now that we are rolling along in class, expect the actual report card to have a lot more grades. You will see Science, Health (no grades for this yet), Homeroom (this is Literacy), Social Studies, and Math grades. Please sign the progress report and send it back to school this week! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to shoot me an email, reminder, or message in your child's agenda! Thank you! Happy Fall!
I am happy to say that we had another great week. Students practiced great perseverance during Literacy and Math MAP testing Wednesday and Thursday. I know testing can be grueling and these kiddos pushed right though! Next Week: During Cougar's Call time this week we will be learning about sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. In Math we will continue Unit 5. This week we will add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100, 1,000, and up to 1,000, 000. Additionally we will be comparing two multi-digit numbers using the > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal) symbols, and writing the numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Last week was the first week of swapping for Literacy! Ask your child (or check their agenda) to see which Literacy group they are going to everyday from 1:00 - 2:15! This week all literacy groups will be focusing on theme in fictional stories. By the end of the week, students will be able to compare themes in different stories and explain their reasoning. In writing, students will continue to work on the Writing Process. This week the 4th step (Editing) will be introduced. Students will work individually and with a writing partner to edit their multi-paragraph papers. Integrated Studies this week will focus on the question, How do we start our own "Dream Business"? Students will begin a project in which they get to create their own business! Ever seen Shark Tank?! Students will work on their own version in class over the next week. This week we will go over the planning behind the project, a business logo, how to write a business letter to request funding and marketing, and finally how to create an advertisement. Talk with your child and start brainstorming those wonderful business ideas! Homework: Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda with parent signature. Tomi Happy Friday Families!
We had a fast and eventful week this week! We are well into our read aloud, The Lemonade War, which introduces a lot of business terms and leads us into our Biz Town Unit! This week students applied, interviewed and accepted classroom positions. Next week students will start to earn credits or lose debits based on their classroom participation. (They'll even have to start paying "rent" for their desk space!) Ask your child about their new job in the classroom! Looking into next week... In Math we will continue going over key vocabulary related to multiplication and using multiplication in word problems. Students will learn the 'CUBES' process to help work through the problems. (C - circle important numbers, U - underline the question, B - box key words, E - eliminate unnecessary information, S - solve and check work!) In Literacy, we began rotations which include Fluency, Vocabulary (Wordly Wise Lesson 1), Read to Self (Using 'Think-its'), and Word Work (September Words). September Words - composer, discovery, encouragement, hopeless, impossible, musician, richest, unfriendly We practiced some fun chants with the September words! Ask your child to chant them out to you this week! In Writing, we started our Writing Notebooks with a list of '100 things that we love' to create fun topics to write about over the year. We started the Writing Process and will continue with the next stops of the week. In Integrated Studies, students will be starting their North Carolina Resources project.
