Alright, here is our last weekly update for the year! Here's what we have to look forward to heading into this 3-day week before Winter Break!
In Cougar's Call Monday we will be finishing up our unfinished work and working on word work. Tuesday we will switch for targeted math instruction. Wedneday we will start the morning with our December Words Spelling Test and exchange our compliment "gifts" to each other in class. Our class wanted to do something nice for each other, so without spending money we are creating compliment presents. On Friday, students drew 6 names in which they are secretly writing thoughtful compliments to classmates. We will reveal compliments Wednesday morning! In Math this week we will continue our unit in geometry, focusing on classifying quadrilaterals. By Wednesday, we will begin exploring symmetry. In Literacy we will wrap up our historical fiction book club. Students have really enjoyed reading these exciting texts! I've never seen students so engaged in reading multiple chapters at once in a class setting! I encourage them to keep reading this genre if they find it enjoyable! On Wednesday we will wrap up a little early due to our Winter Party! In Integrated Studies we will finish up our study of the phases of the moon. We will wrap our study up with a lab where we recreate the 8 phases of the moon using oreos. Students will be able to demonstrate the phases using the cream of the oreos before eating the cookie. Announcements: -Winter Party 12/21 from 2:00 - 2:45 Come join us!! -Winter Break 12/22 - 1/4 -Read-a-thon 1/4 - Calling all book worms! Email me if you're interested in coming to read a short read aloud to our class Wednesday! -Math-a-thon 1/5 -Science-a-thon 1/6 - Have a fun science experiment? You are more than welcome to come demonstrate or send me ideas for a day filled with science fun! 1/6 - Character Assembly Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda -Complete 30 minutes each night on Compass Learning or approved math site. -Study December spelling words (Test 12/21!) I hope you all have a wonderful winter break and holiday season! I thank you all for your neverending patience and kindness. I am so thankful for this class of 25 wonderful 4th graders. I'm kind of biased, but I'm not kidding when I say I got the BEST class ever :) Merry Christmas, Tomi

The projects are finished! Thank you for all your help AND coming to visit our class this week! The kids loved showing off their structures! They definitely exceeded my expectations, so thank you for inspiring them to go above and beyond! Next week is our last full week before winter break so we have a lot to fit into the schedule. Starting 12/13 on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Cougar's Call we will begin switching classes for targeted math instruction. From 9:20-10:15 students will move to a 4th grade classroom to recieve additonal math practice. In addition to Cougar Call Math swap, in Math we will continue our study on angles and shapes in Geometry. We will be identifying triangles for the first part of the week (categorizing by both angles, and sides), and begin classifying quadrilaterals on Thursday and Friday. I highly reccomend watching some of the Khan Academy Videos and doing the practice problems to gain experience and confidence with classifying line, angles, triangles and quadrilaterals. Here is a link to the vidoes and practice: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fourth-grade-math/cc-4th-geometry-topic In Literacy we will begin reading historical fiction. We will divide the class into book clubs and tackle reading strategies for understanding historical fiction texts. On Wedneday, students that scored below an 80% on the Literacy test will retest. The remainer of the week will be used to model reading historical fiction, and meeting in book clubs to read and discuss the text. This week in Integrated Studies we will focus on Science. More specifically, we will base our study around the questions, "What causes day and night? What causes the phases of the moon?" We will begin the week learning about the rotation of the sun, earth and moon. Next we will look into what causes our day and night and seasons. Finally, we will dicuss the phases of the moon and create a mini flip book to help us remember the eight phases. To wrap up our study, we will create the phases of the moons out of oreo cookies! On Friday we will have an edible science lab! We still need 4-5 packages of oreos for this lab. Let me know if you would like to donate a pack of oreos for the sake of learning ;) Announcements: 12/16 - House Meetings 3:00-3:55 & Science Fair Registration Deadline 12/22 - Winter Break! Homework: -Read 2 and a half hours and log in agenda -Study December Spelling Words (Test 12/21) -Complete 30 minutes of math practice on compass learning or approved math site (Khan Academy) December Spelling Words: continuous, conversation, forgotten, nonliving, swimming, unpleasant, valuable, unimaginable I can never say it enough, thank you all for your support! Have a wonderful weekend! December already?! Time, slow down! The room has been buzzing with excitement over our Footprints project! This week we spent every afternoon reviewing grammar, (I have drilled them to put themselves last when using 'I' or 'me' in sentences because it's just rude. They better have that one down!) and writing journals from the perspective of a North Carolina native from the past. Next week we will put our finishing touches on the journals and then prepare to present to the class. Here's some other stuff on our agenda:
In Cougar's Call we will start Monday off with the Unit 3 Math test on multiplication and division. Over the weekend, students should keep reviewing their study guide and practicing the repititive steps of multiplcation and division until it sticks with them. The rest of the week will be split into additional math and writing instruction. In Math we will move on to the next unit: Geometry. This week will focus on the 3 types of angles (acute, right, and obtuse) and how to use these angles to create shapes. On Friday during math time, our grade will participate in the Hour of Code. From 12:15-1:15 students will race to write code on their chromebooks! If you have experience with code, feel free to come join us! In Literacy this week we are continuing to master close reading of nonfiction texts. My groups book clubs have had some great discussions on nonfiction text! I hope to see those same thoughts put on paper this week. I want to prompt students to take what they think about the text and put it into words. On Friday they will show me what the know on the Unit 2 Formal Assessment. This test will be composed of questions on identifying main idea, inferring, and identifying text structure to better understand nonfiction text. In Writing we will put our finishing touches the Footprints project journals. Finally in Integrated Studies we will present our projects. Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 we will walk around to the fourth grade classrooms to preview the other students' structures. Please come join us! I know the students are very excited to show their hardwork! On Wednesday and Thursday students will present one of their journal entries to the class. Dressing up (over the uniform) is welcome but not required! The final part of the project is the reflection which will take place on Thursday afternoon. Here students will write a reflection on the whole project and describe what they have learned. Announcements: -Saturday 12/3 School Beautification @10:00 -Tuesday 12/6 Structures Due for Footprints Project -Wedneday 12/7 Oral Presentations for Footprints Project -Friday 12/9 Hour of Code 12:15-1:15 -Our next science unit will be about the phases of the moon. I am going to need 4-5 packages of oreos for a fun science lab. If you would like to help, let me know! Homework: -Study for math test (12/5) -Finish Footprints Project (due 12/6) -Read 2 and and a half hours and log it in agenda -30 minutes of math practice on compass learning or dream box each night Thank you all for donating your time, snacks, and kind words lately. I don't know how I got so lucky! Let me know if you need anything, I'm an email, phone call, or text away. Tomi Wednesday Mrs. Holoman came in and taught a character lesson on appreciation. For the activity, students wrote a thank you letter and made a gift bag for a police officer to show appeciation for all that they do! Pretty cute! Thanks for arranging this and delivering the goodies Mrs. Holoman-the kids had a blast working on this!
