We are finished with flex grouping. The remainder of the year will be in homerooms. We will still have math and literacy time and follow a schedule (because these kids and I need consistency!) We hope to have some fun math and reading lessons in the upcoming weeks! Due to being in homeroom classes, we have move recess to 2:00 instead of 10:40 so students have a break during the second half of the day! MATH EOG 5/29. Please encourage your child to go to bed early and eat a good breakfast! Please make sure your child is on time to school! In Integrated Studies this week students will be learning all about North Carolina as well as the other 50 states. They will make a postcard from that state with fun facts! We have finally made it to EOG week! Please make sure your child is getting enough rest and eating healthy meals to ensure they are ready for lots of good thinking!
Math: This week will be spent reviewing multi-step word problems and factions. Literacy: Students will spend the first two days of the week finishing up the essential question: " How do humans harness energy?" by reading multiple types of text and finding the main idea and supporting details. Integrated Studies: We are starting our very last unit of the year! In this unit, students will learn about the culture and arts of North Carolina. They will have multiple projects to work on in class, so please make sure your child is completing their work. You can log into PowerSchool to see if your child has any missing assignments. I highly encourage students to practice additional math work on Khan Academy and by practicing with the mock EOG. Literacy: This week students will read nonfiction and fiction text centered around the topic of matter and energy! Students should feel confident finding the main idea and summarizing texts. Integrated Studies: Students will wrap up researching their famous mistake inventions project. We will move on to a short 3 day unit on healthy eating habits! Math: We're working on geometry this week. We'll go through lines, angles, and shapes. Please refer to Khan Academy if your child would like to go deeper into the topic or needs additional practice. Literacy: We're wrapping up our first essential question about how living and nonliving things are related by reading fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Integrated Studies: We will spend the next couple of days wrapping up our IB unit on electricity. Students will present their lighthouses (with a working light!) and showcase their travel brochures. By the end of the week we'll start our next unit on famous inventions that were made by mistake! We will look at converting metric units. (Ask your child about the song to go along to help them remember the order of units!) Literacy: Students will continue reading about ecosystems this week but with a focus on technical, fiction and even poetry! By the end of the week students will be able to describe the relationship between living and nonliving things in an ecosystem! Integrated Studies: This week students are constructing their lighthouses and visitors guides. Visitor guides/brochures and lighthouse with working circuits need to be completed by Friday. Both will be for an informal grade at the end of the week. Math: We will spend a few days on decimals. Students should be comfortable with writing decimals as fractions and comparing decimals. By the end of the week we will start reviewing elapsed time. Literacy: We are starting our Reading Blitz where we review all types of reading from the year. This week we'll focus on informational text. Integrated Studies: This week we'll learn about static electricity, and circuits! By the end of the week students will build their own circuits to light their lighthouses! Math: We are continuing with multiplying fractions this week. Students will have a quiz on Wednesday for an informal grade. Literacy: Students will continue poetry as well as adding in drama (*think* reader's theater!) We are really focusing on finding common themes, tone, and mood throughout different types of literature. Writing: Our class is finishing up the last step in the writing process: publishing. The rest of the week, we'll work on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Integrated Studies: Last week we learned about heat energy and light. This week we'll look at how light and sound travel. Towards the end of the week we'll learn about magnets and even build an electromagnet in class! Math: We will spend this week exploring Topic 10 - multiplying fractions with whole numbers. Math: We are trudging through fractions! We will continue topic 9 on adding and subtracting fractions. I HIGHLY recommended practicing adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Integrated Studies: After leaning about the Earth changing throughout time, we are beginning to focus on animals changing throughout time. We will spend the week learning about vertebrates/invertebrates and animal adaptations. On Thursday, students will receive information about our last home project of the year! I will send more information home about the project next week. Math: We are starting unit 9 on adding and subtracting fractions. During this unit, students will be asked to decompose fractions (think, 1/2 = 1/4 + 1/4), add fractions, and subtract fractions. Students will work in class on multiple worksheets and flex teachers will take one of the worksheets for an informal grade. Literacy: Students are continuing reading historical fiction. Over the week students will work with comparing and contrasting points of view, making inferences, and theme. Over the week, students will work on a reading log in class and this log will be taken for a FORMAL grade on 3/15. Writing: We are writing imaginative narratives. Students are working through the writing process to complete their stories. Integrated Studies: This week students will start learning about animal adaptations and needs to survive.
