A few years ago, Good Morning America asked the world if they could describe their life using only 3 words. They hosted a live event from all around the world where people posted their 3 words. We made it through a full week of testing! Woohoo! Next week is back to a somewhat normal week!
Cougar's Call: On Monday we will work on vocabulary and spelling. Tuesday and Thursday we will switch for targeted math instruction and Friday we will have our test on the January spelling words. Math: We are jumping straight into Topic 8 which is fractions! I highly recommend letting your child spend time on Khan Academy practicing identifying fractions and equivalent fractions. The link is posted below. We will spend the week looking at equivalent fractions based on visual pictures, number lines, and we will also compare fractions. www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fourth-grade-math/cc-4th-fractions-topic Literacy: We are starting our new unit on historical fiction. Now that students know how to read history, we'll go back to putting with with common fiction elements. We are starting book clubs in class which will last for about 10 days. Each book club has a different schedule with reading assigned as homework. Most book clubs will have reading assignments nightly as homework for the next few weeks. On Friday students will take a quiz on identifying historical fiction story elements such as character traits, setting, and perspective. Integrated Studies: We are moving through time to discuss the Civil War and reconstruction after the war. This week we will look at battles that took place in North Carolina and important people during this time period. On Friday we have a Character Assembly! Cougar's Call: Monday morning we will review factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers one last time before the Unit 7 formal test. The rest of the week will be used as catch up time for vocabulary and spelling work. Wordly Wise and spelling work will be due Friday, February 2nd. Math: Testing, testing and more testing. Every day this week during our math time (12:05) we will test. Monday we will have a test on Unit 7 (this is for a formal grade). Tuesday we will take the CMS Quarter 2 Math Assessment (not for a grade). Wednesday and Thursday we will take the Math MAP and Reading MAP tests. Finally, Friday we'll take the CMS Cycle 3 Literacy Assessment (not for a grade). With the 3 snow days, we had to push everything back and unfortunately all of these tests are on a tight schedule. Let me know if you have any questions! Literacy: On Monday we will finish up the unit on reading history. We will not swap Tuesday-Thursday this week for Literacy groups. This time will be used for finishing up tests that started at 12:05. Integrated Studies: On Monday students will present their slide on North Carolina's major roles in the American Revolution. The rest of the week we will discuss the after effects of the American Revolution, such as the Bill of Rights and the similarities and differences between the US Constitution and the North Carolina constitution. On Friday, students will have their club day! HOMEWORK: -Read 2 and a half hours and log it in agenda -Study January spelling words -Practice favorite multiplication and division strategy 5 times (This will help for the test tomorrow!) PRACTICE PROBLEMS FOR THE UNIT 7 TEST: 1. Find the factors of 25 2. What are the first 5 multiples of 8? 3. Name 5 prime numbers and 5 composite numbers. How do you know they are prime/composite? 4. Is 178 a multiple of 6? Why or why not? (hint you need to divide!) 5. Is 246 a multiple of 3? Why or why not? 6. 48 x 14 7. 65 x 12 8. I'm thinking of a number. The number is even. 4 is a factor of this number. The number is a multiple of 5. Which could be my number? 15, 8, 20, or 30. Explain how you found your answer. Thursday morning we will go over the Unit 7 Math test and make corrections as needed. Math: On Tuesday we will review the Unit 7 Study Guide. On Wednesday we will take the Unit 7, formal test. On Thursday we will start into our next unit, everyone's favorite, FRACTIONS! ;) Literacy: This week will be spent going over the formal from Thursday. We will review techniques for being a successful reader as well as teach about context clues. We will not swap on Thursday. Integrated Studies: We are continuing to learn about North Carolina's role in the American Revolution. Students have split up 5 major events (the Edenton Tea Party, Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, Halifax Resolves, Battle of King's Mountain, & the Battle of Gulliford Courthouse) and they will present their findings on Wednesday in a skit, a powerpoint, or on a poster. On Thursday we will start looking into North Carolina's Bill of Rights. This will continue this topic into next week. Cougar's Call: Students will receive their January Spelling words and wordly wise 4 packets for the month. Tuesday and Thursday we will switch for flexible math groups. Math: We are starting Unit 7 which is understanding factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. On Friday, students received a study guide for this short unit. The study guide is due Tuesday, January 16th. Literacy: We are continuing our unit on reading nonfiction, historical text. Monday and Tuesday we will read and talk about using different perspectives to understand literature better. On Tuesday students will have an informal quiz about perspective. On Wednesday and Thursday we will talk more about point of view and read more in depth into the causes and first events in the war. On Friday students will take a formal assessment on historical text. Integrated Studies: We are starting out next unit about American government. We will start the week looking into the causes of the American Revolution and end the week talking about North Carolina's role in the American Revolution. After Tuesday, students will be able to understand what taxes without representation means with a fun hands on edible exercise! Tomorrow is Read-A-Thon! Your child is invited to wear their pj's to school if they bring in $1 to help raise money for the Pet Humane Society. Tomorrow we have a lot of reading activities planned. If your child has a favorite book from home they'd like to share with the class or their book buddy, make sure they bring it! Thursday is Math-A-Thon! Friday is Science-A-Thon! If you have any old newspaper, can you please donate it to our class? I have a fun activity planned that involves lots and lots of newspaper :) Friday afternoon is our character assembly from 3-3:30. If you'd like to come in this week to share a story, play a game with the class or speak about something reading/math/science related let me know! We are very flexible this week :) Congratulations to Mary Sullivan and Markus for winning 3rd place in the Hoop Shoot Competition! You both are ALL STARS!
