Hi all! Whew it's been a busy week! With quizzes, tests, and MAP testing on top, these kiddos are probably ready for the weekend too! Hopefully next week will be less hectic!
Cougar's Call: Students will work on Wordly Wise Lesson 2 and copy down the November Spelling words in their agenda on Monday. Monday and Friday will be used for vocabulary, spelling and fluency practice. On Tuesday and Thursday we will start swapping for targeted Math instruction. Check our your student's agenda to see where your child will be during this time. On Wednesday morning, students will take their Social Studies test. Students went home today with a study guide :) Math: In Math we are starting Topic 3 on Multiplication. We will start the week by using multiples of 10,100 and 1000 to answer large multiplication equations (e.g. 3x2=6, 3x20=60, 3x200=600, etc.) We will also spend the week practicing multiplication methods and perfecting the method that works best for each student! Because we will be multiplying large numbers, it is ESSENTIAL that each student is fluent in their multiplication facts from 0-12. Please, let me know if your child needs additional practice. I have extra flash cards he/she can borrow! Literacy: We have learned about characters, plot and summarizing over the past few weeks. Now we will take a look at theme. This can be tricky for students to see the "big picture" or lesson of a story. You can help by talking through the common themes in folktales, movies, or books you're reading at home with your child! With more practice this concept will get easier :) Writing: The students should have their writing process completed by Monday. This is the 5 paragraph paper on a topic of their choice that we've been working on daily in class. We will wrap up the writing process (for now) and learn how to write a friendly letter. This is one of my favorite lessons! Students will learn the proper way to write a letter and address an envelope. They will use this skill at Biz-Town where they will receive a letter from a friend at their "work"! Integrated Studies: We are wrapping up our Shark Tank projects and presenting Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday one group from our class with compete with other groups from 4th grade to present to "investors." On Thursday students will start working on BizTown work. HOMEWORK: -Read two and a half hours and log in agenda -Social Studies study guide -Math book page 85 & 86 ANNOUNCEMENTS: **Volunteers Needed Monday, October 9th for Raku Pottery in Art during Connect. We need one or two volunteers to come in during our connect (10:20-11:30) to help pass out supplies, help students create their pottery and write names on the bottoms of the project before they dry. Send me a remind or email to let me know if you're interested! ***Scroll down to see how to sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences! Fall conferences are finally here! I cannot wait to sit down with you all and discuss my big plans for your child this year! Conferences are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. Due to time restrictions, I can only meet with each of you for 20 minutes. Because of that, please come prepared. I will have MAP scores, progress reports and student self-evaluations to discuss with you! Below is the link to the conference google sheet. Please be careful when typing and deleting. Anything you change, changes for everyone! (I know, super stressful!) With that in mind, please sign up for one time slot that works for you. You'll write your child's name and your name in the box (ex. Billy Smith-Mrs. Smith). If you're too freaked out by the google sheet, I will send home a paper version in Cougar Folders on Monday. You can write your top 3 slots and hope for the best :) If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email. I have been able to get a lot done over the last two days and am excited for the students to return to an organized classroom on Monday! We are in full swing of 4th grade! Here's what our week looks like:
Cougar's Call: We will have a quick math quiz on Monday and Wednesday on addition and subtraction. We will also continue MAP testing on Tuesday and Thursday. On Friday we will have our very first Spelling test on our September Words (composer, unfriendly, encouragement, impossible, musician, discovery, richest, hopeless.) Math: We are wrapping up adding and subtracting numbers into the hundred thousands. On Thursday we will review the Math study guide that will be sent home Monday. On Friday we will have the Topic 2 Test. This is for a formal grade! Please let me know if your child is uncomfortable with adding and subtracting these large numbers. These basic operations will come in handy throughout the year. Literacy: We are going to start looking into plot, summary and theme using fiction text. On Thursday we will have a short quiz on summarizing. In writing we are continuing the writing process. We are working on revising and editing. Integrated Studies: This week will be centered around Shark Tank! Students will create a business! This is another small group or independent project where students create a slogan, radio ad, and floor plan of their business. It must be a new business that hasn't been created already! Start thinking about possibilities! Tuesday and Wednesday we will learn strategies to help us add and subtract numbers into the hundred thousands. This is a quick unit, if your child is struggling with the homework this week (or exceeding your expectations!) let me know so I can give supplement/different homework. On Wednesday during math time we will take our Math MAP test. In Literacy we will finish up our character discussions with a short quiz on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday during this time will be devoted to finishing MAP tests. In Integrated Studies we will learn about our role in the economy. We will take a look into producers and consumers. This will gear up our conversations for Biz-Town! HOMEWORK: -Read 2 and a half hours a log it in agenda -Math worksheet -Study September spelling words ANNOUNCEMENTS: -9/19 - Reading MAP -9/20 - Math MAP & Leroy Fox Spirit Night -9/21 & 9/22 - No School! Wish List: -I went around today and asked kids about headphones. We have at least 10 kids that do not have headphones. With MAP testing coming up (early finishers may have time to get on compass learning or dreambox) headphones would be greatly appreciated! If you have any extras laying around at home bring them here! -Snacks are also appreciated-even if it's a box of saltines. I found a barrel of pretzel sticks at Costco last week for $4! These growing kids are starving at the end of the day so time you want to contribute or help is wonderful! Hi C3 Families! We've had another successful week of 4th grade. Everyone is just now getting into the flow of how our day works. Here's what we have going on next week:
In Cougar's Call we will continue working on the first Wordly Wise packet together as a class and practice using that vocabulary. We will also do some fun spelling activities to better prepare for the spelling test at the end of the month! On Friday we will end the week with a science experiment, morning meeting, and a reflection of the week. In Math we will have our first assessment (for a formal grade) on place value on Tuesday. To prepare, a study guide was sent home in your child's agenda today! While the study guide is not for a grade, I HIGHLY recommend each student completes the pages to ensure they are ready for the first test of the year! Let me know if you think your child needs additional support, and I can send home some extra resources or recommend some helpful sites. On Thursday we will move into our new unit, Adding 4-digit number with regrouping. Helpful link https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fourth-grade-math/cc-4th-add-sub-topic/cc-4th-adding/v/why-carrying-works In Literacy we will begin switching for targeted reading instruction. Students will write down the name of their Literacy teacher in their agenda on Monday. If you have questions, let me know! Each group with start the week with focusing on characters. On Tuesday students will take a short quiz (for an informal grade) on character desires and obstacles. By the end of the week, we will learn more about static and dynamic characters. In Writing, students are learning the steps to the writing process. Students have already chosen a topic. Now they will use that topic to draft a formal essay. The writing process will take a few weeks but will eventually be for a grade. I'll keep you updated :) In Integrated Studies we are learning about North Carolina's resources. Students will be broken up into groups to explore a resource and create a video in class about that topic! We will spend the week researching and by Friday hope to present all videos in class.
