Hi all! Hope you're enjoying your Labor Day weekend! I'm still super excited for the upcoming week. Here's what we have to look forward to:
In Cougar's Call we will read and discuss our new read aloud, "The Lemonade War." This book introduces students to business terms to gear them up for our first IB Unit, "How We Organize Ourselves." On Friday we will change gears for a fun science experiment where we will learn how water move through a plant. Math skills this week include identifying and comparing numbers to the millions place value. We will also work on rounding numbers. Some students struggle with this skill. I highly recommend reinforcing these skills at home. I am glad to send home extra practice and/or you can use Khan Academy. Here is a link to good videos and practice problems: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fourth-grade-math/cc-4th-place-value-rounding In Literacy this week we will begin rotations. -The first rotation of the week is Vocabulary. At the beginning of each month students will receive a vocabulary packet called Wordly Wise. While we will complete most of the first packet together this month, in the future it will be the students' responsibility. Students will receive a new Wordly Wise packet each month. It will be collected at the end of the month for a completion grade. -The second rotation is Spelling. Students will also receive a list of 8-10 spelling words each month. Students are to practice the words for homework. We will have a spelling test at the end of the month. -The third rotation is read to self. While students read to self in class, I will pull small groups to work on fluency and targeted reading instruction. In Writing this week we will set up a writing journal. We will talk about the writing process and begin our first piece of work by the end of the week. On Fridays we will have a picture of the week activity where students view a picture and describe what they see or write a story about what the picture could be about. In Integrated Studies we are beginning to look into the 3 regions of North Carolina - the Mountain, Piedmont, and Coastal regions. We will then take a closer look into the natural, human and capital resources of those regions. HOMEWORK: -Read two and a half hours and log it in agenda -Review Spelling Words ANNOUNCEMENTS: -9/4 - No School -9/5 - Reading Rocks Log Due -9/8 - Panthers Spirit Day! -9/14 - Curriculum Night 6:45-7:45 WISH LIST: -Money towards Time for Kids Newspaper. For 24 copies it costs about $140. Pricey I know, but I would really love to instill a fun way to read nonfiction to these students. Time for Kids are informative, interesting and great conversation starters. Any donations towards the paper would be helpful! -Anyone willing to organize Cougar Folders for 15-20 minutes on Mondays Sorry for the lengthy update. We have a lot to look forward to! Thank you for all of your donations and time already! -Tomi

Hi C3 Families,
I am so excited for this upcoming year! I can already tell we're going to have a blast! Thank you for coming to open house and already volunteering your time and resources to our classroom! Here's a look at what we will be doing this week: This first week we'll spend a lot of time getting to know each other and learning how to work best as a family. In Math we'll review multiplication other math skills from 3rd grade. In Literacy we will begin our first unit on building a reading life. Good readers don't just read, we also build our reading lives. Now that your child is a big fourth grader, we will spend some time learning how to read fluently and choose books that are their level. In Integrated Studies we will start our first unit called "Let's get down to Business." We will learn about how North Carolina buys and sells products and is connected to other states and countries around the world. This first unit is a lot of fun! Students will soon interview for a classroom job where they get paid weekly and have to balance a checkbook correctly to use their credits. HOMEWORK: -Students should be reading 2 and a half hours every week. This can be broken up into daily reading (that's only 20 minutes over 6 days!) or larger chunks. I cannot stress the power or reading enough! -Students should log the book title, amount of time read, and have a parent or guardian's signature under the reading log for each day read. I often reward students to having their agenda filled out and reading signed! ANNOUNCEMENTS: -9/4 - No School -9/5 - Reading Rocks Logs Due -9/8 - Panther's Spirit Day VOLUNTEER NEEDED: -I need a volunteer to stuff Cougar Folders every Monday (excluding the first 2 weeks of school) If you're free for 15-20 minutes on Mondays and would like to help, shoot me an email or remind! I appreciate the help! If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out! I am truly grateful and excited to work with your child this year! -Tomi Welcome to Open House! I hope you've had a chance to walk around a bit. This is the website that I will use throughout the year to update you on important dates, tests, and announcements! Make sure you bookmark my page! (You can find it in the welcome packet on your student's desk.)
